Muay Thai Fights this coming Sunday September 27th

This coming Sunday these four AMMA GYM Muay Thai warriors step into the ring, Jason fighting his first full thai rules fight as a senior without pads and the other three, Tarmizi, Alan & James fighting to claim a spot and make the next step onto the Australian Team headed to Sweden next year.

3 Big Events, 1 weekend - AMMA GYM in the spot light again!

The weekend just gone has been a HUGE one!

Adam travelled with a few of the fellow Machado Grapplers from Western Australia to compete in the annual 'The Gathering' Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition.

The results were amazing! Tyrone (Toots) took out the double gold! Weight division and absolute. He never looked in trouble and dominated all that he fought. 

 Adam Jacques landed a perfect flying arm-bar (again) and had his opponent tapping before he hit the ground! Adam only lost to Tyrone in the final, amazing to have AMMA as 1 and 2 in the division.

News from the WEST!

Our grappling team also competed in the 'WA BJJ Invitational' competition held on Sunday.

 Peter Parsons took out the GOLD in his weight division.

 Dion took out the GOLD in his weight division.

 Patrick took out the SILVER in his weight division.

 CJ took out the BRONZE in his weight division.

 Huge Thanks to Gavin Taylor for helping out on the day.

MMA Event!

On the same weekend as all the above, our Purple Belt JED stepped into the ring to compete in an MMA Event. Jed has had numerous fights and stepped up to a very strong opponent.

 The fight was looking good with the landing some decent strikes from standing. 

 One small mistake saw Jed on his back with his opponent in his guard. Jed controlled this well, throwing up a few submission attempts - however it wasn't his day and unfortunately lost via a choke.

Australian and Pan Pacific Titles, Gradings and seminars

The next few months are going to be extremely busy!

Our grappling division have their calendars full over the next month or two. We have competitions, gradings and seminars plus we ramp up the training into comp mode.

The Gathering: Machado Australasia Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Competition.

Running on September 12th (Saturday), this is our annual event for the Machado brotherhood of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Once again, we will be sending a team to compete in the event and to catch up with our interstate and overseas friends.

Magid Hage Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Seminar at AMMA.

 We are pleased to bring over our first HyperFly Athlete to The Academy of Mixed Martial Arts - Magid Hage or 'Gorilla Hands'

 The Seminar will be running on October 4th (Sunday) from 5:30 p.m. onwards.

Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Power Up Session!

The kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Grading or 'The Power Up Session' will run on Saturday September 19th starting at 9:00 a.m. running till 10:30 a.m.

 This event is open to all our affiliate schools and will involve a 'round robin' style event to finish off the grading.

 Tip Grading is $15.00 and Belt Up Grades are $25.00

 You must grab your grading slip from reception - speak to your coach for all the information and details.

Power PI Pan Pacific Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournament:

The next BIG tournament to run in Australia is the Pan Pac's. Run in Melbourne over 3 days, this is a huge event and scores points towards the ABJJF as well as the IBJJF.

 Day 1 is Friday October 16th and the finals will be held on Sunday October 18th.

 Ideally we will fly our team out on October 14th for a day to chill and unwind prior to the BIG event.

State, Australian and National Champions!

The last two weekends has been very productive for The Academy of Mixed Martial Arts.

 David Kriel and Gavin Taylor both fought on the weekend of August 15th and we had a great night.

 David fought for the WKA State Muay Thai title and won via 'cut' early in the second round. He has been training exceptionally hard for this fight and did an amazing job.

 Gavin took the fight (4 man round robin) on a few days notice and weighed in the lightest (by a few kilo) in the event. Gav won the first knock out round and headed into the final. The fight was tough and Gav was ahead on points going into the final 30 seconds however a slick little move from his opponents caught Gav in a deep triangle from which he ended up tapping to.

 We are proud of both of our warriors and are team that supported and helped to prepare them.

The weekend just gone has been a whirl wind! 

 Adam headed to Melbourne on Saturday to corner his grappling team that competed in the Grappling Industries 'Submission Only' round robin event.

 The three competitors were Tim, Jazzy and Kristina. I'm proud to announce that all of them took out a Gold Medal as well as a few others. 

 The team have said that it was one of the best competitions that they have been to and would be very keen to compete in the next one.

Next Stop - Adelaide!

Our next competitor was Jake O'Driscol that was competing in the Australia Cup.Jake took out the Gold in his Gi weight division, Silver in his No-Gi weight division and Bronze in the Open Weight No Gi division. Great weekend, great results and we are proud of our competitors.

 Lastly, our own Purple Belt and Strength and Conditioning coach at Riddlers (our sister BJJ gym) Chris Partfitt competed in a 2 day Crossfit event. team came 12th overall!

Huge grading Saturday Night

Congrats to all that graded on Saturday night in the Muay Thai and BJJ, Look at all those new colours! There were some great skills on display. Well done and looking forward to the next grading in November, keep tuned for the exact date to be announced soon!

On the 15th of August at Craigie Leisure Center David Kriel steps up and challenges for his first state title the WKA 67-70kg title. Come down and support him wearing your gym colours and shout down the house. 

Parents with children Fitness classes

Attention all parents that would like to train in a high energy fitness class, but have the problem of not having a babysitter and can't train?? 

We have the solution for you every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 9:30am we run fitness classes where you can leave you child/children in our purpose built play area, having the ability to attend to them at any time while you get your workout in. 

These sessions are a high paced fitness, strength and conditioning class using kickboxing drills and body weight exercises to burn fat, get fit and leave you feeling empowered and energised for the rest of the day!

Our kids Muay Thai classes are a great way to increase physical activity and make new friends, while gaining the skills needed to develop into a confident and responsible adult.

Students learn the positive benefits of self discipline, develop co-ordination and increase strength and flexibility. 

Parents can be assured we promote discipline, good behaviour and focus on respect. just as much as training the techniques. As a result our students develop their listening skills, increase their concentration levels and gain confidence which reflect improvements at home and school.

Remember guys - we  have an open level session running on Monday for both the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the Muay Thai.

The biggest 'all girls' Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition was held on the weekend - ran by the amazing Jess Fraser and hosted by AMMA GYM. It was a 'round robin' format with both Gi and No-Gi....

It was a huge success and everyone had an amazing time.

TEAM AMMA Grapplers - Another day more Gold!

Dominating the BJJ scene in WA.

 

 The last few Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments held in WA have seen the team from AMMA dominating several of divisions.

 Our team has been improving on a daily basis and it's a pleasure to watch the competitors getting better and better.

 As a coach, I could not be more proud of the team, the work load and training ethics that has been built into our culture and above all - the whole atmosphere that the people at AMMA have created.

 Keep doing what you guys and gals are doing, its really impressive!

Anzac Day Public Holiday

Anzac Day long weekend. Monday the 27th is a public holiday and the gym will be closed but Saturday we will be open for normal classes. See you all there

Intermediate Level Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes.

Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 p.m. - 8:15 p.m.

 Running on Tuesday and Thursday AMMA Gym will now be running a LEVEL 2 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class instead of the Open Rolling sessions.

 These classes are designed to drill / train specific areas of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu prior to jumping into the Level 3 or Competition Class.

 We strongly suggest that all beginners that have been training for 3 months or more jump into this class straight after the Beginners class at 6:00 p.m.

 There will be rolling as well as drilling in this class, so a mouth guard is essential.

Chloe is the youngest person to be awarded this rank and is a valuable member of our Junior coaching team as well as a great student.

BJJ4LIFE.INFO - our next submission only competition is a few weeks away

Our next competition is running on April 12th (Sunday) and is a Gi competition.

Once again, it is a submission only based competition and there are no points.

 We will be brining in the 'legit submission attempt' for an advantage point for all the coloured belt in this competition.

 If at the end of the round (for non semi & final rounds) and there has been no legitimate submission attempts, then both of the competitors will be eliminated.

 All final rounds, have an extra time limit round prior to going to a sudden death round for the first point and advantage.

 Winners of each division will receive 9 points, Silver 3 points and Bronze 1 point.

 The top ranking Blue, Purple, Brown and Black Belt at the end of the year will receive a return airfare to Melbourne. 

 *Conditions apply to win the prize

 Best of luck and see you all on the day - our next event will be held in July (towards the end) and it will be another Gi Event.

Easter Training Times

Easter is almost here:

Happy Easter to everyone, 

AMMA GYM will be closed for classes on Friday, Sunday and Monday due to the public holidays.

 Normal classes will be running on Saturday - the kids and adults as well as the open mat sessions.

If your desperate and need to get your grappling fix in, post it up on our members forum and if one of the coaches is free, they will come in and open up for you.

Yoga has been cancelled

Due to the low numbers, we will not longer be running the morning Yoga classes at AMMA GYM.

We do - however - have 'Classes on Demand' inside our Plus 24/7 Gym, which runs several options as far as Yoga, Cardio, Spin and Boxer-cise classes go.
If your a member of Plus - make time to visit our virtual training room and have a trial of the classes.

Muay Thai Gradings at AMMA GYM

Attention AMMA Muay Thai crew Muay Thai gradings are back. The first one for the year will be on Saturday the 18th of April starting @ 6pm sharp get in at 5:30 to warm up and get ready. For any other info see your coach at training!

Gold at 'The First Arnold Classic'

I travelled with a small team of 5 people to the recent Arnold Classic (the first one in Australia) to be part of history and support our fighters.

Once again, our team put on an amazing display of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and heart.

Timmy took out the Gold in his division. Finishing all his opponents from mount.

Jake and Chris both closed out their division and via friendly hand shake - Chris took out the Gold and Jake the Silver. Please note - this wasn't a fight - they simply decided that Gold looked much better on Chris :)

Adam Jacques started off with a flying arm bar that just missed the mark - it was a battle from there with Adam defending several positions and was at the end declared 'unconscious' via the referee and lost the fight. We strongly believe that Adam was still fighting and looked shocked when the fight was called off.

Kane (in his debut fight) took out the Silver - did a great job for his first outing and coach Adam Jacques was over the moon with his performance.

Clark Gracie at AMMA GYM

This weekend is going to be HUGE!

We have a team heading over to Melbourne for the 1st ever Arnold BJJ Classic held in Melbourne on Friday. This is a Gi event and should be massive.

AMMA also has a team competing on Sunday at the State No Gi Titles at Craigie.
 The team must wear the appropriate Ranked Rash Guards and meet all the standards for the AFBJJ rules and regulations.

 Make sure that you come along and support our warriors, wear your AMMA Gear and be part of the team.
